Darwin finches
by Go2 Galapagos
Charles Darwin

Galapagos is very famous because of its unique wildlife and its position as one of the worlds last paradises. In the Archipelago of the Galapagos, many species have had the opportunity of evolving through natural history without the interference of humans.

One of the most notorious cases is the one of thefinches. This little black or gray bird inspired Darwin in his theory on the origin of species and natural selection. During his voyage to Galapagos, in the 18th century, Charles Darwin found that fiches differ dramatically in their finch structure, from one island to another.

Basically all Darwin finches come from one descendant who was the one who arrived to the islands, thousands of years ago, and became part of natural evolution.

Some birds managed to cross from one island to another and eventually stayed in this new habitat, evolving in its characteristics as a different species. By the time Darwin arrived to Galapagos, finches were already different from one island to another, not only their finches where different, but their whole behavior.

Some finches developed a strong and tough finch, which made it possible for them to crack hard seeds in search for food resources. Other finches developed very fine and long finches, which enabled them to reach for larvae stated of insects inside tiny holes and hiding spots. There is one very rare case in which, one of the finches species learned to use a little stick to drive the larvae out of their natural home inside a cactus plant.

During his voyage in the Beagle ship, Darwin collected numerous specimens of finches and took them back to England for further investigation.

Darwin's observations in the Galapagos islands were the main example for his famous evolution theory masterpiece. Years after, finches became a basic for his evolution theory. In 1859 Darwin published his book "Evolution of species through natural selection". The publishing of this theory was quite a revolution at that time.
