The
Participatory Management Board of the Marine Reserve was informed
about the results of the sea cucumber capture by the Charles Darwin
Research Station and the Galapagos Park Service
These two organizations
established that the total capture was 8.301.449 animals.
There is a big
difference between this year and last years capture. Last year the
total capture was less than 3 million animals, and the total amount
of money made was 1,4 millions, so obviously, the price for each
animal dropped this year
One bad thing
is that the number of fishermen has doubled and the price of each
sea cucumber has dropped to half.
A typical problem
during the sea cucumber capture period is decompression. Most of
the fishermen do not have adequate equipment to dive and they neither
follow the safety procedures of timings and daily dives. This year
16 cases of decompression were reported.
There were several
incidents reported, mainly by aggressive fishermen who were caught
fishing in illegal areas. During the second month of the sea cucumber
capture campaign the Navy didn’t collaborate with their officers
to back up the National Park Service Rangers, so the fishermen didn’t
had any respect for the rangers who were fiscally attacked in several
occasions.
The National
Park Service presented 61 administrative infraction to fishermen
who broke the law, only 2 were sanctioned.
