SHARK FINS WERE SEIZED IN THE GALAPAGOS ISLANDS |
El
Comercio (October 3, 2003)
The fins were
found aboard the cargo ship Virgin of Monserrat, inside a bag. The
Galapagos National Park personnel were alerted about this illegal
fishing by an anonymous call. The Park Wardens organized a joint operative
with the Ecuadorian Navy and boarded the Virgin of Monserrat for an
extensive search. |

The
search for illegal cargo took place at Puerto Ayora, where the previous
week, specially trained dogs found 12 pounds of lobsters, whose tail
size was less than 15 centimeters which is the minimum size allowed
for fishing. The dogs are specially trained to find products of illegal
fishing and belong to the Unit of Environmental Protection of the
Ecuadorian Police.
Marco Villacís, of the technical department of the Galapagos National
Park has said that this is not the first time that illicit fishing
products are found aboard cargo ships that bring provisions to the
islands; they have found sea cucumbers, shark fins and shark meat.
The ship is detained in the bay of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno at San
Cristobal Island, and the responsibility lays on the owner of the
vessel, Arvitres S.A. from Guayaquil. |
