The
Economist (March 6, 2004)
The magazine
The Economist published in the United States, in its edition of
March 6 has an article about the situation in Galapagos. The article
mentions that these are dangerous times for the conservationists
in the islands. It states that in the last week of February a group
of 30 scientists were detained by "angry fishermen" that demanded
the use of semi-industrial fishing techniques in the waters of the
Galapagos Marine Reserve, such as the "Long Line" fishing. This
consists of a long line with many hooks.
|
The
Economist recognizes that the use of this technique may have
"serious implications" for the conservation. The magazine also
states that there is a serious problem of sustainability, as
the number of fishermen is close to one thousand and the capture
of fish and other resources like the sea cucumbers have drastically
diminished.
